Jewelry Care

General Care

  • Protect jewelry from scratches, sharp blows, chemicals, sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Apply makeup and hairspray before putting on jewelry.
  • Remove jewelry before swimming, gardening or doing other household chores. Chemicals such as chlorine and bleach can damage gemstones and even precious metals.
  • After wearing, gently wipe each piece of jewelry with a nub free 100% cotton cloth to remove any makeup and skin oils.
  • Store each piece of jewelry separately so that they do not scratch one another.
  • Store jewelry in individual resealable plastic baggies to retard tarnish, or in cloth bags with a strip of anti-tarnish paper. Jewelry with stones such as pearls and opals that need to "breathe" should not be stored in plastic.
  • Store jewelry away from the sunlight. Sunlight may fade gemstones.

Cleaning

Although there are many cleaning methods, to be safe I recommend only using a jewelry polishing cloth or sunshine cloth to clean your jewelry. Along with the proper care, this method should keep your jewelry looking beautiful for many, many years to come.

  • Jewelry Polishing Cloths: Rub gently with a jewelry polishing cloth or sunshine cloth to remove tarnish and to restore luster.
  • Commercial Silver Cleaners: Before using commercial silver cleaners check that it's safe for the gemstones in your jewelry. Gemstones such as lapis lazuli, pearls, opals, amber, turquoise, malachite and coral should not be placed in many of these commercial cleaners.
